The Role and Work of the Pastor

17 In Christ Jesus, then, I have reason to be proud of my work for God. 18 For I will not venture to speak of anything except what Christ has accomplished through me to bring the Gentiles to obedience—by word and deed, 19 by the power of signs and wonders, by the power of the Spirit of God—so that from Jerusalem and all the way around to Illyricum I have fulfilled the ministry of the gospel of Christ; 20 and thus I make it my ambition to preach the gospel, not where Christ has already been named, lest I build on someone else’s foundation, 21 but as it is written, “Those who have never been told of him will see, and those who have never heard will understand.”

  • The Faithful Pastor/Shepherd:
    • Directs all Praise to Christ.
      • Verse 17, Paul’s boasting is only because of the work of Christ.
      • 1 Corinthians 1:31
      • 2 Corinthians 10:17
      • Galatians 6:14
      • Those who have been called to shepherd God’s people have been called, equipped and made to prosper by the power of God.
    • Emphasizes obedience in Word and Deed.
      • Verse 18
      • Pastors and shepherds must be bold to preach the gospel of Christ, but they must also strive to live out the implications.
      • They are men just like anyone else.
      • This is a work of the Holy Spirit apply the truths of the Word to their hearts
      • Even as they exhort their flock they too are being sanctified by the teaching of scripture, renewing their minds and fixing their eyes to Christ and his finished work of salvation.
    • Is attended by divine Power.
      • Verse 19a
      • During the apostolic period through “signs and wonders”
        • “Signs and wonders” refers to miracles
        • While God used miracles during the apostolic period to demonstrate the authority of the apostles’ teaching, since the closing of the canon of scripture we believe the miracles spoken of here have ceased.
        • God still performs miracles today, mainly the regeneration of dead souls by the power of the Holy Spirit
      • The Holy Spirit is working through the Word preached by faithful pastors/shepherds to bring sight to our blinded minds, heal our broken hearts and set free our captive souls
    • Strives to see the Mission completed.
      • Verse 19b
      • Paul mentions Illyricum
        • Modern day Yugoslavia
      • In total Paul traveled approximately 1400 miles on his various missions to preach the gospel and plant churches.
        • Most of this journey was on foot
      • Often pastors don’t see much of the fruit of their labors during their lifetime.
      • However they remain obedient to their calling to preach the Gospel and to lead their church
      • Someone else may reap the harvest, but all praise and glory goes to Christ
    • Is burdened to Reach the unreached.
      • Verses 20-21
      • This is the primary calling of the faithful pastor. To preach Christ crucified to the lost.
  • Application
    • Pray for leaders
      • Hebrews 13:17-18
      • Our pastors need prayer
      • Christ hears the prayers of the righteous (Proverbs 15:29)
      • Helps keep our pastors accountable
    • Aspire to be leaders
      • We need more leaders
      • If you meet the qualifications (1st Timothy 3:1-13 and Titus 1:5-9)
    • Plead for more leaders
      • Prayer comes into play here as well
    • Shepherd your leaders
      • Teaching our young children and adults is important here.
